The English Bluebell

Hyacinthoides non-scripta commonly known as bluebell. First described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 in his book Species Plantarum, and placed in the genus of Hyacinthus. The non scriptus means unlettered or unmarked, this separates it from the classical hyacinth of Greek mythology. The bluebell is protected species in the United Kingdom under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.landowners are prohibited from removing common bluebells on their land for sale and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs of wild bluebells. Bluebells do contain a range of chemicals with potential medicinal properties. They contain 15 biologically active compounds that may provide protection against insects and animals. Some of these are being tested for the use in combating HIV and cancer. All we can add is they do make our ancient woodland very pretty and mystical creating their blue carpet at this time of year.

Wild Ducks

As the rain comes down, two ducks shelter in our beck in order to attempt to get away of the rough water, and a little bit of bread was very much appreciated.

The Breathtaking Tulip

Although tulips are often associated with the Netherlands, commercial cultivation of the flower began in the Ottoman Empire. The origan of the name from Otterman tulbend meaning muslin or gause, although this is thought to have derived from dulbanb a Persian word meaning round. The variegated varieties admired during the Dutch tilipomania gained their delicatley feathered patterns from an infection with the tulip breaking virus, a mosaic virus that was carried by the green peach aphid. The virus produced fantastic flowers, but also created weakened plants making them likely to die. The mosaic virus is almost eradicated today.

Classic Fern

The fronds of the fern begin to unfurl. The fern belongs to a group of about 12,000 species of plants. Ferns reproduce via spores and have neither seeds nor flowers. Ferns first appear in the fossil record 360 million years ago, but most ferns did not appear until roughly 145 million years ago. Ferns natural habitat vary from mountain tops to dry desert rock faces, but are perfect in any cottage garden. The Scandinavians believe that ferns flower on one night of the year, and anyone who sees a fern flower is thought to be guaranteed to be happy and rich for the rest of their lives. We have to admit we have not seen one as yet. Let us know as and when you do, good luck.
