The English Bluebell

Hyacinthoides non-scripta commonly known as bluebell. First described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 in his book Species Plantarum, and placed in the genus of Hyacinthus. The non scriptus means unlettered or unmarked, this separates it from the classical hyacinth of Greek mythology. The bluebell is protected species in the United Kingdom under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.landowners are prohibited from removing common bluebells on their land for sale and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs of wild bluebells. Bluebells do contain a range of chemicals with potential medicinal properties. They contain 15 biologically active compounds that may provide protection against insects and animals. Some of these are being tested for the use in combating HIV and cancer. All we can add is they do make our ancient woodland very pretty and mystical creating their blue carpet at this time of year.
